Lexicon MV-5 Music & Cinema ProcessorThe Lexicon MV-5 is one of the latest offerings from the legendary Lexicon line. This unit offers audio and video preamplification along with built in digital processing, their celebrated Logic 7 decoding, Room EQ, and - for the first time - multiple Room EQ settings for different listening positions, a feature not even available in their flagship MC-12HD! It is also the first Lexicon processor with Faroudja video processing which can up-convert any video format to HDMI output. Thus a single HDMI cable between the MV-5 and the video display will provide signal from any input. For more details, visit the Lexicon website.
Lexicon is the foremost developer and manufacturer of digital audio processors in the world, period. They brought the very first professional digital audio product to market in 1971 and have never looked back. They demonstrated a similar firm commitment to and tremendous success in the field of home cinema with their flagship MC-12 which is now the world's top preamp / processor. That continues with the MV-5 which makes key features of their advanced technology available at an incredibly accessible price point.
The MV-5 has in fact leapfrogged other Lexicon units by offering features not even available on the MC-12 such as direct USB connection to your PC for control and playback of streaming audio files. Another unique feature is the option of a dock accessory that plays music from your iPod.
But what we consider to be the most outstanding but feature of this series of Lexicon products is the capability to automatically calibrate the unit to your individual listening environment. This feature provides an automated procedure for speaker setup and system equalization like it's elder sibling, the MC-12. This makes for a startling improvement in system performance and, by extension, every piece of audio equipment in your system, for a comparatively small investment. The clarity and accuracy of the result is not an incremental improvement but an order of magnitude.
You could spend tens of thousands of dollars on speakers, processors, cables, a room consultant and remodeling of your listening environment and STILL fall short of the improvements you can achieve with this sophisticated yet simple setup procedure.
But not inclined to rest on their laurels, Lexicon provides not one, but three memory banks to store settings for three different listening positions each of which can recalled instantly.
If you've been to a large concert venue in the last few years and you also go back far enough to have attended large venue shows by the top acts of the 60s, 70s, or 80s, you KNOW how much concert sound has improved. The Rolling Stones in concert in 2008 sound A LOT different from their 70s shows and this is primarily due not just to bigger, better PA designs but particularly to digital audio processing algorhythms that have been developed (at great expense!) and are now available in reasonably priced units like the Lexicon MV-5.
But stepping back for a moment, when we acquired our first Lexicon MC-12, I was using a $14,000 Theta Casablanca which I loved at the time so I already had a very high quality surround sound processor in my system. Then along came the Lexicon MC-12B with Room EQ. I installed it place of the Theta and began to put it through its paces and draw comparisons. Not surprisingly, it sounded good as you would expect of a Lexicon product or any product that costs $14,000.00 but I wasn't convinced that it outperformed the Theta which sets the bar pretty high. But the dizzying array of features and incredible flexibility that the MC-12 offered were also very attractive and as I heard more about the Room EQ feature, my curiosity won out - I had to get a mic kit - a little under $1000 for that alone.
I still felt a bit skeptical but then the mics - and the moment of truth - arrived. I had been reading up on the procedure and it is a fairly simple and straightforward process. Plug the four mics into the rear panel of the MC-12, locate them in a cluster in "the sweet spot" - your preferred viewing/listening position - and with a few button pushes on the remote, the MC-12 and the mics do their magic.
WOW! I could not believe how much it improved the sound. The clarity and accuracy of the surround channels is like 300% better than it used to be. It was amazing and so simple.
But a fully loaded MC-12 ain't cheap! Those of that took the plunge early on had to spend big bucks for that level of technology. Now with the MV-5 you not only get the benefit of their design advances and additional features that even the MC-12 doesn't have, you can get all this at this incredible price of $1,200.00 AND the mic is included!
And did I mention? The MV-5 operates from 90-250 volts and 50-60Hz so it works around the world and comes with a US power cord and two international power cords.

Lexicon is widely considered to be the #1 company in the surround sound processor business. They have been making surround processors since 1971 and they are the 'gold standard' for digital surround processing not only for home cinema but for musicians, producers, professional recording studios and, of course television and film production facilities. Lexicon is part of the Harman Specialty Group, the same company that owns Mark Levinson and Revel speakers. Together, these 3 brands make much of the world's finest audio gear.
